How to Generate a Stat Graph (Daily Data Example)

In this post we will work through an example to illustrate how to create a graph using the SportsMaestro Baseball Web App. In the example considered here, we will graph the cumulative ERA of Tim Lincecum and Chris Carpenter during the 2009 MLB season to produce a graphical representation of their battle for the NL ERA title.

  1. Go to the Baseball Web App: Visit this link: http://sportsmaestro.com/baseball then click on the “Stat Graphs” tab.
  2. Major League Baseball Statistics and Analysis Web Application Stat Selection Button Box. The Button Box allows you to select the state types for your query into the baseball stat database.

  3. Select Button Box Settings: Select PITCH, PLAYER, DAY (since we want to graph day-by-day stats), and STANDARD (since we want to graph ERA which is a standard stat).
  4. Major League Baseball Statistics and Analysis Web Application Cumulative Check Box. This check box allows you to select between Cumulative and Non-Cumulative data format.

  5. Check Cumulative: Check the Cumulative checkbox since we want cumulative ERA not the ERA for each particular appearance.
  6. Major League Baseball Statistics and Analysis Web Application Year Selection Pull-Down. This pull-down allows you to select the year for your query into the baseball stats database.

  7. Set the Filters: In this example we only need to set the year filter. Set it to 2009.
  8. Major League Baseball Statistics and Analysis Web Application Player/Team Selection Panel. This panel allows you to select the players or teams for your query into the baseball stat database.

  9. Input Players: First input Chris Carpenter into the text input box in the Player/Team Search panel, select his name when it pops up in the menu below, then press enter. Carpenter should pop up to the right in the Selected area. Do the same for Tim Lincecum.
  10. Major League Baseball Statistics and Analysis Web Application Graph Options Panel. This panel allows you to select the stat to graph for each player or team.

  11. Add ERA Trend Line for Each Player: Now that Carpenter and Lincecum are both in the Selected area you can generate trends for each. First select Chris Carpenter from the “Select Player/Team” pull down in the Plot Options panel. Then select ERA from the “Select Stat To Graph” pull down. Then click on the EXECUTE button to plot the trend. The trend name should pop up to the right and the graph below should show the trend. Next do the same for Lincecum.

  13. The Result: The resulting graph should look like this. Lincecum had a rough start to the season and Carpenter had a late start but their ERA’s converged mid season and they battled it out for the ERA title until the end of the season where Linceum came out on top.
  14. Major League Baseball Statistics and Analysis Web Application Get Graph Link functionality. The link allows you to revisit the graph at a later time or send the graph to a friend or post to a forum or blog.
